Emergency Preparedness for Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Patients

In emergency situations, preparation is essential—especially for patients who rely on durable medical equipment (DME) for their daily health needs. This resource page provides practical steps to help individuals stay prepared, safe and equipped during unforeseen events.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation or natural disaster and any of the following apply to you, please call us immediately at 1.888.336.9363 if we’ve not been able to reach you:

  • There is damage to your equipment, or it is not functioning properly.
  • You are on life-sustaining equipment (e.g., oxygen, ventilator) that requires electricity, and you are without power.
  • You are running low on your medical supplies.

Additionally, in the event you’re being asked to evacuate your home due to a natural disaster or emergency, please be sure to do the following, if possible:

  • Ensure equipment and supplies are easily accessible and can be transported readily, if necessary.
  • Maintain an emergency contact list that includes your durable medical equipment (DME) provider, doctor and local emergency services. Inform contacts about your status and any changes to your condition or medical equipment and supply needs.
  • If you have equipment with back-up batteries (i.e. ventilators, portable oxygen, etc.), test the battery to ensure it is working properly and keep the battery fully charged so it can be used in case of any future or prolonged power outages.
  • If you are or have evacuated your home, please ensure you bring all your medical equipment and supplies with you. Once you have reached your temporary safe site, please contact Synapse Health to inform us of your location so we know where to reach you should you need assistance with your medical equipment or supplies.
  • If you are still without power, contact your utility company to understand when power will be restored if your equipment requires electricity. Use backup power sources until the main power supply is confirmed to be stable.
  • Inspect equipment and check for any damage or malfunction. If equipment is damaged, contact us immediately. Be sure to take photos and document any damage.
  • Replenish any medical supplies (tubing, oxygen, etc.) that may have been used during the hurricane.
  • If you experience a medical emergency, please dial 911 immediately.
